News surfaced this morning that burglars have entered the Johannesburg offices of FIFA and made off seven trophy replicas and two football shirts. The robbery has been confirmed by the police as this News24 article attests but, given the ever-present allegations of criminal behaviour surrounding the world football governing body, one can’t help but see the irony in it. Who says burglars don’t have a sense of humour?

And in related news, I was travelling back to Johannesburg from Pretoria on Sunday when a traffic report alerted me to the fact that authorities had closed the N1 highway from Rigel Ave in Pretoria East to Soweto outside Johannesburg. For the uninformed that’s about 50km of highway and it wasn’t only one lane that was closed but the whole damn highway!

Why? So that FIFA dignitaries could be transported to Loftus Versfeld and Soccer City! Who do these clowns think they are? And what the hell is our government doing kowtowing to a bunch of people who refuse point-blank to pay taxes in this country?

I sincerely hope that Brazil doesn’t fall into the same trap in 2014; Unfortunately, it’s probably already too late.
