Actually, listening to his diatribe on the day it struck me that he sounds more like a happy-clappy evangelist. Admittedly, I've only experienced that once in my life when a girlfriend way back in the early 1980s dragged me along to a Rhema meeting that featured Pastor Ray in full voice. In both cases you are expected to take the pronouncement on faith. Same horse; different colour.

I didn't say that it would see the end of the energy efficient industry; just that it would loosen Philips' grip on that industry while also providing an alternative that doesn't contain mercury. Also, don't be fooled by the wattage numbers. Current CFL bulbs are only 50% more efficient than incandescent ones. Check out this story for clarification.

I can't see how it will spell the end of the energy-efficient industry. This thing is only 40% more efficient. That means that a normal 100 Watt globe now _only_ consumes 60 Watt of electricity. A 13 Watt CFL produces the same amount of light as a 100 Watt incadescent. Still worlds apart.

Thanks for the info. The 60 days of support for newbies would definitely make the $20 a worthwhile investment. But where would users go for that? Is it explicit on the packaging? Presumably that's Canonical and not ValuSoft?

Hi,

So I wrote up a little bit about why we're putting Ubuntu into retailers like Best Buy on the Canonical blog: http://blog.canonical.com/?p=18

Essentially, it's to try and reach out to users who may not know about downloading Ubuntu, or don't have the bandwidth to do so. Additionally, you do get 60 days of support to help you get up and running. Probably doesn't apply to you personally, but it's a big help to less technical users who are worried about installing a new operating system.

Thanks for the mention and I'm glad you liked John's post. It's always nice to be appreciated.

I would just like to point out that Commentary.co.za does actually let you link to particular posts, and each post has a 'Permalink' link at the bottom of it. I'm a bit perturbed that you missed it though, as it means our style might not be as clear as it should be. We may have to look at emphasising it a little more in the future.

For the record, the permanent link to John's post is http://commentary.co.za/archives/2008/06/07/facebook-humanism/

Janco, you're not doing yourself any favors by arguing with me on a random blog.

Your results are extreme outliers compared with what the entire rest of the industry sees.

Perhaps 10 years ago your sample was more representative but it's clearly way off today.

We have been sampling for over ten years and were even included in the list of sites that the Justice Department used in its inverstigation. Our results were even certified by a Judge.

Janco Associates, there's just no way that Netscape has 10% of the market. That disagrees with the results of every other survey out there and it doesn't come close to reflecting what the major search sites are seeing either. It's just wrong.

I certainly understand users reluctant to change, trust me on that. It's our biggest single challenge in getting them to move to a better browser with Firefox. But that doesn't make your 10+% number for Netscape any less wrong.

Now, I don't dispute that within your sample, Netscape has a big share, but that reflects poorly on your sample and the general applicability of the results of your survey. Like I said, it just doesn't agree with anything that anyone else in the world is seeing. It doesn't even come close.
