Firefox cracks 20% US market share

Research just released by US-based Janco Associates shows that Firefox is continuing to take browser market share away from Microsoft and now has almost 20% of the market. Janco has claimed in the past (in an interview with yours truly) that figure represents a global market share but other research houses, on other continents see it differently.

Indeed, a year ago the European research house, Xiti Monitor, measured Firefox use at 25% across Europe – some territories exceeded 40%. Unfortunately, there isn’t definitive local research on the subject but reports from blogger friends who track these things seem to indicate that SA is closer to Europe than the US. Hallelujah.

Play it again Sam

You could be forgiven for that feeling of deja vu. El Reg is reporting that Microsoft has finally released the first major bug-fix for Vista. But for me the money quote is:

The only problem? A number of security products won’t start up or run on updated desktops thanks to “compatibility problems”.

It would seem that, in the name of security, SP1 breaks other vendor’s anti-virus and firewall products. Needless to say, Microsoft’s own security products are unaffected. Now where have I heard this tale before? Netscape anyone?

Of course, none of this is new. ars technica predicted this assault three years ago when the Redmond behemoth entered the antivirus and antispyware market. The more things change…

From the horse’s mouth

Since the launch of Vista it has come under fire from all quarters. Now, it appears, criticism is coming from the horse’s mouth. Check out Ivo’s post on the subject here.
